Assignment – April 9, 2018 – Digital Collage

A digital collage is a form of graphic art that uses virtual imagery and textures from different sources pieced and layered together into a final assembled image. You will develop a collage that personifies (represents) at least five things about yourself. Your collage can convey these traits either through visual images you took on your cell phone, a DSLR or images you found online. The structure of the collage is entirely up to you and should reflect your perception of your traits and how they shape you.

You can highlight your traits either directly or indirectly. You can show these traits directly by showing words or pictures or indirectly by including words or pictures that show activities or interests you have that involve your personality. Your collage will be assessed on the quality and effort and the degree to which you portray your personality. Simply placing quotes, words or pictures in photoshop is not good enough, rather you need to demonstrate how it reflects who you are as a person.

Try to do brainstorming with a friend by working together to answer at least three questions from each category:

  • My Hobbies/Interest
  • What it reflects about me
  • My Personality Traits

Once you have identified at least five personality traits then start on your project.

  1. Gather your imagery in a single file titled Digital Collage saved in your Pictures file.
  2. If you took images on your cell phone or a DSLR you should correct the image in Lightroom before opening them in Photoshop.
  3. In Photoshop, make a new blank 8×10 (horizontal or vertical) @300 DPI and title it – All About Me Collage_Last Name.
  4. Select elements from your gathered images to move into your collage.
  5. After you get a good selection with the magic wand or magnetic lasso, remember to MASK and refine your selection. If you want soft edges you will go to SELECT>MODIFY>FEATHER.
  6. Think about the rules of good composition, review the composition lesson if needed, when designing your layout of elements and background. Move layers around from the layer palette.
  7. Save your work as a .PSD file until you are completely done with it, and then save as a .JPG to post to your blog.
  8. Your blog post will be at least three paragraphs.
    1. Paragraph One – Describe how you identified your personality traits. What was the brainstorming process?
    2. Paragraph Two – How did you set up and use Lightroom and Photoshop to create your collage.
    3. Paragraph Three – How can creating a collage help you develop your photographic and computer skills? And, How does this collage
  9. Verify and submit your final product as JPG on a thumb drive to Mr. Swartz to receive credit for your work.
